The importance of a good business card design

In such a competitive business world of today, it is important to display your business image at its best.

Without sounding like a grumpy old man, I have a major problem when someone hands me a business card which has had no thought or care given to it. If you can’t be bothered to make an effort to give me a decent business card then what is the rest of your business going to be like?

It may be a bit presumptuous to assume that just because a business card looks awful, that the rest of the business will be as bad. Without any creative input how would you know that you were doing it all wrong?

So it brings us on to what actually makes a good business card design, well in my opinion quite a few things:

Design

The design should reflect the services of the company; if you are running a surf school the design can be cool, edgy and unconventional which reflects the nature of your business. On the other hand if you are a lawyer then maybe a bright pink business card with yellow spots is not quite the right way to reflect your professionalism.

The design of you business card should just follow common sense, it’s good to be unconventional, but only in the right way that suits your business nature.

Logo

Memorable branding is the key to a business card; ensure that your company logo is present on your entire print medium to ensure consistency. When someone looks up your website from your business card and instantly recognizes your colour scheme and logo, job done!

Contact Details

The main reason you are giving someone a business card is so they can easily contact you if they wish to use your services. Your contact details should be clean, clear and concise. If you can’t read it or you have used an awful font then you have wasted an opportunity.

Printing

You spend all this time getting your business card looking its best and then go and try to print them at home on your eight year old inkjet printer and cut them out with a craft knife – not a good idea! Commercial printing is very low cost nowadays so do yourself a favour and get the printed professionally!
